Kostis Dalamaras traveled extensively before returning to Naoussa to take over the family winery. On his wine-tasting journeys, he met producers, exchanged views and experiences and, as he himself says, “every two days away was equivalent to a month at wine school.” With this open-minded approach, the decision to work with Merlot does not seem at all paradoxical—even in Naoussa, where Xinomavro dominates. Merlé is the elegant, single-varietal expression of this international variety, bearing the estate's signature. Unlike Aghechoros, where Merlot “softens” Xinomavro in the blend, here it takes center stage: a wine of high aesthetics, with a velvety texture, excellent balance, and aromas of sour cherry and plum.
At a time when everything is sold and bought, even in Naoussa, the only way to decide to buy a new vineyard is not because it is for sale, but because it is a piece of land where he wants to spend every afternoon. The same applies to his decision to cultivate Merlot, a non-traditional variety in Naoussa. And his preference for this grape is reflected in Merlé.
