The production of a great Vintage Port begins with a difficult decision: recognizing a vintage as exceptional enough to be “declared” a Vintage Port—something that happens only a few times in each decade. The grapes come exclusively from the finest, steep vineyards of the Douro, where low yields and schist soils provide exceptional concentration and structure. After fortification with wine-derived alcohol, the wine ages for about two years in large, old wooden barrels and is then bottled unfiltered, so that its true evolution can continue in the bottle for many decades. Quinta do Infantado’s Vintage Port is a wine of immense structure, with an almost impenetrable color, explosive concentration, and dense tannins that foreshadow inexhaustible aging potential. Despite its power, its balance is impressive and reveals itself more and more as it evolves in the bottle. It will require decanting and is a moment worth remembering.
