100% Montepulciano, vinified as Cerasuolo d'Abruzzo DOC, the iconic rosé expression of Abruzzo’s flagship red grape variety. Its bright cherry-red colour results from a short period of skin contact, a traditional technique that gives the wine greater structure, intensity and complexity than most rosés. The vineyards are farmed biodynamically around Orsogna, at an altitude of 440 metres, between the Adriatic Sea and the Maiella mountain range. Fermentation occurs spontaneously with indigenous yeasts, while ageing in concrete tanks followed by bottle maturation preserves the purity of the fruit and the authentic expression of the terroir. The result is a rosé combining freshness, balanced acidity and a distinctive almond-tinged finish, elegantly bridging the gastronomic appeal of a light red wine with the refinement and vibrancy of a rosé. A wine that showcases the authentic character of Cerasuolo d'Abruzzo, one of Central Italy’s most distinctive and historic wine traditions.
Cerasuolo d'Abruzzo is one of Italy’s most fascinating and food-friendly rosé wines, produced from Montepulciano, the region’s most important red grape variety. Pettirosce—named after the European robin, one of the most iconic birds of the Italian countryside—is crafted by Cantina Orsogna, one of the country’s most pioneering cooperative wineries. The traditional vineyards, trained according to the historic Pergola Abruzzese system, are farmed biodynamically, while winemaking follows a philosophy of minimal intervention. The name of the appellation derives from the local dialect word cirasce, the Neapolitan cerasa, and ultimately the ancient Greek word cherasion, meaning “cherry,” a reference both to the wine’s distinctive colour and its aromatic profile. Rich aromas of maraschino liqueur and ripe cherry are complemented by subtle hints of caramel. On the palate, it is savoury and gastronomic, combining gentle tannic structure with refreshing acidity and a generous fruit-driven finish. A characteristic almond note on the aftertaste adds further complexity and persistence. Expressive and full of personality, Pettirosce offers a return to a different style of rosé—one rooted in tradition and character, far removed from the now ubiquitous Provence-inspired model.
