Winery Cantina Orsogna

Cantina Orsogna
Wine producers, Real Artists!

Not all cooperatives are the same, and Cantina Orsogna is perhaps one of the finest examples of why. In the small village of Orsogna in Abruzzo, nestled between the Adriatic Sea and the Maiella mountains, more than 450 winegrowers cultivate small family-owned vineyards, continuing a tradition that began in 1964 when 35 families joined forces to protect their land and secure their future.

What sets Cantina Orsogna apart is not its size, but its philosophy. Early on, the winery embraced organic farming and later biodynamic viticulture, gradually converting the vineyards of its members into one of the largest certified biodynamic projects in the world. This was never a marketing strategy, but rather the natural evolution of an agricultural culture deeply rooted in respect for the land and its ecosystem.

The vineyards are located in a unique area where the maritime influence of the Adriatic meets the cool air currents descending from the Apennine Mountains. Here, Abruzzo’s great traditional grape varieties—Montepulciano, Trebbiano Abruzzese, and Pecorino—thrive, often trained using the historic Pergola Abruzzese system, a viticultural method that has shaped the region’s landscape for centuries.

In the cellar, the approach is equally gentle and respectful. Spontaneous fermentations with indigenous yeasts, minimal intervention, and a commitment to expressing both variety and terroir define the winemaking philosophy. The result is a range of authentic, vibrant, and unpretentious wines—wines that combine approachability and everyday enjoyment with genuine character and a strong sense of place.

For us, Cantina Orsogna represents one of the most compelling contemporary voices of Abruzzo. It is a winery that consistently delivers outstanding value without compromising its principles, proving that sustainability, tradition, and quality can coexist harmoniously in the same glass.
