"La Grande Pièce" is one of the single-vineyard dry wines of the Chateau de Plaisance on the historic hill of Chaume. It is a small south-facing vineyard with pebbles that enhance the reflection of sunlight, thus helping the grape ripen. A wine with excellent intensity, concentration with aromas of lemon marmalade, apple, pineapple, pastry cream and dry fruit elements. The wine has breadth on the palate but at the same time a linear straightforward feel like a train running on its rails. An effect that is given by the "electric" acidity of the wine. A fantastic varietal capture from Vanessa Cherruau of Chateau de Plaisance who is rebirthing this historic piece of land in the Loire and rewriting its history differently through the stunning dry Chenin she produces.
It's not just this historic piece of land across the river from Savennieres, a stunning - yet unexplored - terroir for dry wines, that Vanessa uses as the basis for some of the most delicious wines of the extremely fashionable Loire variety. She continues to nurture this great 50+ year old vineyard that sits on shale and sandstone soils with biodynamic practices and low intervention at all stages of winemaking and grape ripening. Fermentation is with indigenous yeasts and the wine is fermented and matured in old barrels for 12 months and a portion in amphorae. A highly complex Chenin from the Chaume hilltop with a creamy character, power typical of Chaume but with fantastic minerality and energy on the palate at the same time.
An awesome balance of freshness and oxidative character, a hint of honey aromas and richness reminiscent of the equally wonderful sparkling wines from the Chenin Blanc variety.
