Castillon Cotes de Bordeaux, Clos Puy Arnaud Cuvée Bistrot

15,10 €

The remarkable Thierry Valette began producing this bold—by Bordeaux standards—wine in 2008. La Cuvée Bistrot is the complete opposite of the Bordelais obsession with intensity and concentration: delicate, elegant, and gently extracted, to the point of resembling more the Loire or Beaujolais in style. Here, you don’t get the typical “compensation” of classic Bordeaux character—hence its classification as a simple Vin de France—but you gain generously in drinkability, immediacy, and freshness. In a region often marked by its conservatism and attachment to tradition, wines like La Cuvée Bistrot represent an opening toward a younger generation, making Bordeaux appear more accessible and youthful in their eyes. A style full of energy and freshness, meant to be enjoyed young—a true “vin de soif,” as the French would say.

More info

An outstanding natural wine made from 100% Malbec, with 15-year-old vines and minimal sulfur additions (below 30 mg/l total), intended for immediate consumption. In a broader perspective—and considering the whole-bunch vinification—it could be compared to a Beaujolais, even to the finest cru Beaujolais of the region. Fresh and approachable, with excellent concentration of red fruit, full of energy, vibrant acidity, and great intensity. A wine full of optimism, drive, and joy, with the most silky tannins one could wish for. It is vinified in concrete tanks and aged for 6 months in amphorae. And while the exciting “new discoveries” in the wine world—words like Trousseau, Jura, qvevri, pet-nat, and others—have become reference points for modern wine lovers, one cannot underestimate the beauty of classic grapes and regions, especially when they are given a completely new interpretation, as in La Cuvée Bistrot.

Penetrating tensions with beautiful oxidation supported by notes of citrus peel and candied lemon. Give it time to open up and it will throw a party of aromas with saffron and curry, tobacco leaves, nuts such as walnuts and roasted almonds, and earthy notes of truffle. Full of umami on the palate, minerality reminiscent of peat and shellfish, intense...
