Beyond the big names and famous appellations, Bordeaux can sometimes struggle to establish itself. However, you should stop worrying about the “right postal code” and start seeking out the true hidden gems of the region. Clos Puy Arnaud is one such gem in Castillon, a satellite appellation of Saint-Émilion on the Right Bank. The 2016 “Grand Vin” combines the always elegant and delicate style of Thierry Valette’s wines, who belongs to a renowned Bordeaux family associated with prestigious estates such as Château Pavie and Château Troplong Mondot. This is a blend of 70% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon, showing aromas of red and black fruit, smoke, and anise, with very refined tannins—an example of what the Right Bank of Bordeaux can offer to those who love energy and vibrancy in their wines.

More info

Thierry Valette acquired the historic Clos Puy Arnaud in 2000 and dedicated himself to producing outstanding wines based on biodynamic principles, moving toward what are often described as “natural wines,” with minimal intervention in the winery. The 2016 Grand Vin shows crisp, vibrant fruit with freshness and acidity that may be more reminiscent of the Left Bank than the Right Bank. It is a wine that avoids the often jammy character associated with Merlot-dominant blends, at least in certain vintages. Energy, balance, intensity, and fine-grained tannins come together in a crescendo of freshness and drinkability, built around a mineral core that forms the backbone of its structure and flavor. A true wine for aging.

Penetrating tensions with beautiful oxidation supported by notes of citrus peel and candied lemon. Give it time to open up and it will throw a party of aromas with saffron and curry, tobacco leaves, nuts such as walnuts and roasted almonds, and earthy notes of truffle. Full of umami on the palate, minerality reminiscent of peat and shellfish, intense...
