The white wines of the Northern Rhône offer a “parallel narrative” alongside the region’s iconic Syrahs, though they rarely take center stage, mainly due to their limited production. A generation ago, their style was often more rustic and exuberant, far removed from the freshness and radiant expressiveness found in Burgundy. These are wines that rely not on acidity, but on volume and a rich, oily texture. Jean-Baptiste Souillard’s 100% single-vineyard Marsanne challenges this perception, approaching the variety with greater precision and intensity. It expresses a tighter, fresher character, with clean mineral notes and exceptional linearity. Marsanne’s characteristic minerality combines with a crisp, almost austere texture on the palate, lending energy and depth. A key role is played by the old vines dating back to the 1930s, the location in the cooler northern part of the region, and Souillard’s approach, which emphasizes freshness, detail, and clarity of expression.

More info

The old vineyard is located on a gentle south-facing slope, approximately 3.5 km northwest of the village of Crozes-Hermitage, at an elevation of 175 meters. The soil is primarily limestone, and the vineyard is surrounded by fruit trees, such as apricot trees, which contribute to the formation of a unique terroir. Winemaking involves direct pressing of the grapes and fermentation with native yeasts. The wine ages for 12 months in old oak barrels. This is followed by gentle clarification, and it is filtered only if necessary, preserving the wine’s authentic character to the fullest extent.

Penetrating tensions with beautiful oxidation supported by notes of citrus peel and candied lemon. Give it time to open up and it will throw a party of aromas with saffron and curry, tobacco leaves, nuts such as walnuts and roasted almonds, and earthy notes of truffle. Full of umami on the palate, minerality reminiscent of peat and shellfish, intense...
