Castillon Cotes de Bordeaux, Clos Puy Arnaud Grand Vin

52,10 €

Beyond the big names and iconic appellations, Bordeaux continues to hide authentic “gems” for those who look beyond the… right ZIP code. Clos Puy Arnaud is one of them, in the Castillon-Côtes de Bordeaux appellation, a satellite of Saint-Émilion on the right bank. The 2019 Grand Vin accurately reflects the philosophy of Thierry Valette, a member of a historic Bordeaux family linked to estates such as Château Pavie and Château Troplong Mondot. The blend is primarily based on Merlot, complemented by Cabernet Franc and a small percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon. The nose is refined, with smoky and spicy notes framing the ripe fruit. On the palate, it combines depth and freshness, with excellent balance and without a trace of excess. A modern Bordeaux that retains its identity but can also appeal to a younger generation that considers Bordeaux somewhat outdated.

More info

Thierry Valette acquired the historic Clos Puy Arnaud in 2000 and dedicated himself to producing wines based on the principles of biodynamic viticulture and minimal intervention in the winery. The 2019 Grand Vin is a pure, unpretentious expression of Bordeaux, without any unnecessary “makeup.” Although already approachable, it possesses the structure and fruit concentration that allow it to age for at least a decade in the bottle. Vinification takes place in a combination of concrete tanks and barrels, while aging occurs one-third in barrels (approximately 15% new), one-third in demi-muids, and one-third in amphorae for about 6 months. Subsequently, the blend remains for an additional 3 months in concrete tanks before being bottled without fining. The result is a wine with clarity, balance, and a strong sense of place, bridging the classic and contemporary styles of Bordeaux.

Penetrating tensions with beautiful oxidation supported by notes of citrus peel and candied lemon. Give it time to open up and it will throw a party of aromas with saffron and curry, tobacco leaves, nuts such as walnuts and roasted almonds, and earthy notes of truffle. Full of umami on the palate, minerality reminiscent of peat and shellfish, intense...
