Chateau de Plaisance Savennieres

In the universe of Chenin Blanc, Savennières has traditionally been associated with grand, imposing wines with an aristocratic character. And while intensely sweet wines were the style on the opposite side of the river in Layon, here the sweetness was less pronounced, though the wines were not necessarily dry. In the case of Château de Plaisance’s Savennières, we have a modern, austere yet deeply expressive interpretation of the variety from the lieu-dit “Les Mauriers,” on windswept sandy soils over schist, with the bedrock close to the surface; the wine accurately captures the intensity and structure of the terroir. The nose is complex and restrained, with notes of citrus, ripe apple, wax, herbs, and crushed stone, while the barrel adds subtle hints of nuts and spices. On the palate, it is dense, nervy, and austere, with sharp acidity, salty energy, and great persistence. A Chenin with power and precision, perfectly expressing the terroir and aging potential of Savennières.

More info

Savennières Château de Plaisance is made from 100% Chenin Blanc, sourced from the “Les Mauriers” lieu-dit in the village of Savennières. The vineyards are certified biodynamic, covering 3 hectares, with vines averaging over 35 years of age. The harvest is done by hand, and vinification is low-intervention, with spontaneous fermentation using indigenous yeasts and partial malolactic fermentation. The wine is fermented and aged 100% in oak barrels (10% new) for approximately 15 months. A wine of high intensity, precision, power, and sharp character, a thoroughly modern expression of this great terroir.

Penetrating tensions with beautiful oxidation supported by notes of citrus peel and candied lemon. Give it time to open up and it will throw a party of aromas with saffron and curry, tobacco leaves, nuts such as walnuts and roasted almonds, and earthy notes of truffle. Full of umami on the palate, minerality reminiscent of peat and shellfish, intense...
