Malihin Λιάτικο Ερυθρό

To a foreigner, it might perhaps resemble a Nebbiolo (with lower acidity levels), but in reality, Liatiko is the most characteristic expression of the Cretan vineyard. Pale, unstable color, a distinctive, slightly rustic character, dried fruits, a burst of Mediterranean herbs, and a palate that evokes the heat of Crete. Alcoholic, with tannins that build gradually in the mouth and remarkable complexity. Malihin, with her gentle interventions, allows the variety’s character to shine through the glass, letting the unique terroir, the old vines, and the meticulous vineyard care speak for themselves. One of a kind and, naturally, as rare as all of her wines.

More info

Vines of rare beauty, in many cases steep and inaccessible, which have preserved in their “innards” local Cretan varieties that deserve to stand on a global level. Southern Rethymno has unique vineyards at altitude, with pre-harvest roots that are over 100 years old and complex plantings of varieties such as Vidiano, Plyto, Thrapsathiri, Melissaki and Liatiko. Iliana Malihin seeks out and revives such rare vineyards, bringing to the fore an undiscovered wealth, a tremendous heritage for the Greek vineyard in general. Her Liatiko comes from such field-blend vineyards and highlights the unique characteristics of the variety. Wild, untamed, with dried fruit and tannic structure and complexity that will fascinate you.

Penetrating tensions with beautiful oxidation supported by notes of citrus peel and candied lemon. Give it time to open up and it will throw a party of aromas with saffron and curry, tobacco leaves, nuts such as walnuts and roasted almonds, and earthy notes of truffle. Full of umami on the palate, minerality reminiscent of peat and shellfish, intense...
