Hatzidakis "Rampelia" Single Vineyard

A wordplay between “ampelia” (as the vineyard is called in Santorini) and a traditional female Cycladic name, often chosen by vine growers for their daughters, whom they affectionately called “Bella.” This beautiful story lies behind this very limited-production single-vineyard wine from the winery, which is also the first Assyrtiko envisioned and entirely vinified by the new generation. A pure expression of Assyrtiko, with power, energy, and concentration. An impressive Santorini in character, combining the piercing acidity so typical of the variety and its volcanic terroir with dense fruit and a gentle phenolic structure on the finish. Few terroirs in the world can produce wines of such character, and (R)ampelia captures this expression clearly.

More info

This wine comes from an organically farmed vineyard of the Hatzidakis family in the Pyrgos–Megalochori area. Harvest was done by hand, and the grapes were kept in a cold chamber for 12 hours before pressing. There was 12 hours of skin contact, while fermentation took place with native yeasts at a controlled temperature of 16–19°C. Seventy percent of the wine was aged on fine lees for 12 months in stainless steel tanks, while 30% was aged in French oak barrels, and it was bottled unfined and unfiltered. Think of light citrus, toasted bread, wet stone, and salinity giving way to a palate that vibrates, combining elevated alcohol and freshness. Like all wines from the winery, it has a remarkable aging potential, and here its development can easily reach a decade.

Penetrating tensions with beautiful oxidation supported by notes of citrus peel and candied lemon. Give it time to open up and it will throw a party of aromas with saffron and curry, tobacco leaves, nuts such as walnuts and roasted almonds, and earthy notes of truffle. Full of umami on the palate, minerality reminiscent of peat and shellfish, intense...
