Marcel Deiss Grasberg

The Grasberg terroir is located at the top of the Altenberg grand cru hill in Bergheim (at 340m) and translates as "the hill where grass grows". Deiss follows his own classification system for his vineyards and has classified Grasberg as one of his premier crus in Burgundy terms. The soils are very shallow, with the roots penetrating the limestone (from the Jurassic period) to find the nutrients they need. The wine is a field blend of Riesling, Pinot Gris, and Gewurztraminer varieties and is characterized by its intense minerality. The most "electrically charged" of Deiss' botrytised wines. An explosion of lemon jam and freshness reminiscent of mint on the nose, a moderately or almost dry palate with energy, amazing coolness and a delicious texture. The botrytis is extremely "restrained" by the energy of the wine, the fruit is rich, tropical and ripe, but the energy and angles it possesses are correspondingly intense. Another monumental balancing act, a wine that has found the golden mean in its individual elements.

More info

An incredible "polyphony" of aromas and flavors in yet another unique Deiss style. Grasberg is perhaps the finest of their premier crus, a vineyard at altitude that combines minerality, energy, the coolness of the location, and limestone soils with notes of botrytis, which here does not feel heavy against the wine, but rather gives the wine a "crystalline" dimension. It is almost magical how all the individual elements coexist in such harmony and none of them tries to stand out. A "phenomenal" wine from Deiss, which is pressed with whole bunches, fermented with indigenous yeasts, and aged for 12 months in large old barrels (foudres).

Penetrating tensions with beautiful oxidation supported by notes of citrus peel and candied lemon. Give it time to open up and it will throw a party of aromas with saffron and curry, tobacco leaves, nuts such as walnuts and roasted almonds, and earthy notes of truffle. Full of umami on the palate, minerality reminiscent of peat and shellfish, intense...
