If you are fanatics of Nebbiolo, Barolo and Barbaresco, you will find it hard to resist the mineral, delicate and wonderfully balanced character of Lessona by Proprieta Sperino. The return of Paolo de Marchi and his son Luca in Lessona and their effort to revive the family estate has signaled a wine renaissance for this historical area of North Piedmont. People refer to Nebbiolo here as Spanna and the 2012 vintage of Lessona is marked for its delicacy on the nose and the palate as well. A magnificent floral bouquet gives an ethereal sense on the palate, supported by noble tannins and lively acidity. This is a single varietal Nebbiolo that ages superbly.
This wine draws on the tradition of Piemonte but equally of Burgundy. On the sandy soils of Lessona, Nebbiolo acquires a bouquet of aromas like rose, wild cherry and wild grapefruit with notes of tobacco, dried herbs and lively mineral dimension. On the palate its tannins are firm but velvety; the acidity is delicious same as the earthy dimension of the wine on the palate that reminds of wet leaves and brushwood. The wine doesn’t share the muscular character of a south Piemonte Barolo, but what it lacks in power it offers in aroma, energy and finesse.
