Sclavos Mavrodaphni "Monabeles"

34,20 €

The organic Mavrodaphne “Monabeles” of Evriviadis Sklavos belongs to its own special class. Muscular and strong, -how could it be otherwise with a yield of 300kg/ha- it is at the same time perfectly likeable and inevitably attractive. Power and concentration don't violently assault the mouth but build gradually, letting elegance slip away alongside the high-frequency vibrations and tensions. It is perhaps Evriviadis' most iconic wine, the first attempt to produce a dry Mavrodaphne in Greece in 1996. It comes from pre-drying vines, in Monabeles and Kehriona, 80 years old, and is produced with faith in the philosophy of biodynamic farming and natural winemaking. Evriviadis' ultimate way of translating a sensational terroir into a great wine.

More info

Mavrodaphne “Monabeles” is produced from the estate's own biodynamic vines. The very old stumps give a highly concentrated fruit, with an unrelenting intensity on the nose reminiscent of plum, spices, herbs and animal notes. The wine is produced with indigenous yeasts, very low sulphite levels and matured for 12 months in old oak barrels of 500lt capacity. It's a fascinating feeling on the palate, having structure and power that resonate in a Xinomavro, but which has managed to fully get to grips with the concept of pleasure. Aeration always helps the red wines of Sklavos to open up in the glass. So we recommend decanting the black laurel for at least an hour before enjoying it.

Penetrating tensions with beautiful oxidation supported by notes of citrus peel and candied lemon. Give it time to open up and it will throw a party of aromas with saffron and curry, tobacco leaves, nuts such as walnuts and roasted almonds, and earthy notes of truffle. Full of umami on the palate, minerality reminiscent of peat and shellfish, intense...
