Among the amazing crus of Barolo produced by Luigi Baudana, a white wine like Dragon seems unable to withstand any comparison. But that is not so, as the varieties like Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc that are the basis of the blend, were sourced from a cooler part of the “mythic” Cerretta vineyard since the 80’s. The arrival of the Vajra family in 2009 brought the exotic Nascetta with its wonderful floral character and a small dose from the marvelous Riesling of the family, pushing the “Dragon” aromatic-wise to start breathing flame. This amazing terroir and unique blend of grapes could not produce anything less but extraordinary wines.
Dragon Langhe Bianco of 2017 is much more exciting than one would expect from the usual white wine vinified in steel tank. Wonderfully floral in aromas, like it has come for a stroll in a spring field with refreshing notes of citrus fruits, pear, kiwi and a hint of petrol and minerality like flint. On the palate it has richness and the oily character associated with Chardonnay, being fresh and lively at the same time, with tropical character of the fruit and herbal notes. What makes this wine even more interesting is that you make out the contribution of each variety in the blend. The only thing that is modest about Dragon is its price, otherwise this is a great wine both by DNA and terroir.
