Akra Santorini

The viticulturist Spyros Chrysos took over the 200 acres of his family’s vineyards with the ancient vines over 100 years old. He also embraced traditional practices: organic vineyards without mechanical means but with donkeys, experiments with biodynamic cultivation, indigenous yeasts, low sulfites that restore the roots to the modern view of quality white winemaking. The result introduces a Santorini that has much more than just a glimpse of saltiness and mineral character. Next to the remarkable saltiness and minerality reminiscent of ash, there is a soft - full body - fruity character in combination with "oxidizing" hints. That combination gives depth and richness to the wine. It has all that you expect -and more- from an authentic Santorini expression.

More info

Efforts such as Santorini Akra come to expand the range of complexity of the famous volcano wines. The more the leading Greek terroir traces its path to maturity, the more the wines of Santorini will be able to express the different shades of the terroir. After all, what else do you expect from such a great vineyard? It is like having a classic film shot with the talent of different directors who all give something of their unique personal look. The grapes for Akra come from the area of Louron in Pyrgos and Megalochori. The year 2021 was released after eighteen months of slow elevation, developing a very smoky and spicy character along with an exceptional density in both the taste and the texture of the wine. The fruit is full and ripe but of course the acidity is in the classic data of the area giving tremendous uplift and energy. Thus the wine is rich but not heavy, dense but not inelegant, clearly conveying the power of the terroir from which it comes.
